Sometimes the Best Design Solution Isn't the Obvious One
Some of our favourite projects begin with a problem.
Not a Pinterest-perfect floor plan. Not soaring ceilings or endless square footage. Instead, they begin with a home that asks us to think differently.
This Pacifica renovation was exactly that.
The existing staircase divided an already narrow townhouse almost directly in half, disrupting the flow on both the main and upper levels. While relocating it would have created a better layout, the cost was difficult to justify. Rather than forcing a solution that didn't make sense, we challenged ourselves to see the home through a different lens.
What if the problem wasn't actually the problem? What if it was the opportunity?
Instead of trying to disguise the awkward layout, we embraced it. The small, enclosed kitchen that once occupied the centre of the home was completely reimagined as a walk-through wine room and butler's pantry. Today, it acts as the bridge between the kitchen, dining room, and living room, creating a natural flow that never existed before.
The transformation completely changed how the home lives.
What was once the least desirable part of the floor plan has become the feature everyone notices first. It's a space that invites conversation, encourages entertaining, and adds an unexpected sense of luxury to everyday living.
This project is a perfect reminder that great design isn't about having unlimited space or an unlimited budget. It's about asking better questions.
Instead of focusing on what a home can't do, we look for what it could become.
That philosophy carried through every room of this renovation.
Inspired by the relaxed elegance of coastal living, we layered soft blues, warm neutrals, delicate florals, natural textures, and touches of brushed gold to create a home that feels light, welcoming, and effortlessly sophisticated. Every material was selected to bring warmth without feeling overly precious. Every finish was chosen to create harmony from one room to the next.
The result is a home that feels collected rather than decorated. Beautiful without trying too hard. Refined, yet incredibly livable.
We often tell our clients that every home has something working against it. Sometimes it's an awkward layout. Sometimes the budget doesn't allow for a complete gut job. Sometimes it's a staircase that seems to be in exactly the wrong place. Or sometimes it all three.
The secret isn't eliminating every imperfection. It's discovering how that challenge can become the home's greatest strength.
Because the most memorable homes aren't the ones without character.
They're the ones that celebrate it.
This renovation is proof that when you're willing to think outside the box, the very thing you thought was holding your home back can become the detail that makes it unforgettable.
